Privacy Policy
This policy explains how catfeed (“the Service”) handles your information.
1. Information we collect
- Account information: when you log in, we receive the service you use (Google or Apple) and the user ID that service issues. We never receive your name, email address, password, or profile picture
- What you set up: your pages, boxes (the feeds you add, the names you give boxes, the name and coordinates of weather locations, the names and URLs of links in links boxes, and what you write in notes), bookmarked articles (title, link and source) and settings
- Login state: a cookie that keeps you logged in, stored for up to 400 days
- Access logs: to fix problems and prevent abuse, our server provider (Cloudflare) keeps request logs (IP address, browser type, URLs accessed, etc.) for a limited time
- Opened articles: to put together lists of popular articles, we may count which articles are opened. We only count the number of opens for each article, and never record who opened them
2. Information stored on your device
To load quickly and remember your preferences, the Service stores the following in your browser (localStorage). It stays on your device and is not sent to our server: the page you last opened, the board you last viewed (your pages, boxes and articles, so it can appear instantly next time) and weather forecasts (by location, for up to 3 hours), your language, your colors and background photo, when you last viewed the demo page and the background you chose there, the search engine you chose while not logged in, your cat’s coat (if you chose one in the Pixel Cat Maker while not logged in, it is saved to your account settings when you log in), and the picture of your cat used as the tab icon. A cat you are still making in the Pixel Cat Maker is kept in your browser (sessionStorage) until you close the tab, so you can pick up where you left off after reloading.
3. How we use it
- To show you the same page on every device
- To keep you logged in
- To run the Service’s features, such as letting you know about new articles
- To fix problems and prevent abuse
4. Third-party services
The Service uses the following services. Each handles information according to its own privacy policy.
- Cloudflare: our servers and database. To see which pages are viewed and how fast they load so we can improve the Service, your browser also sends Cloudflare Web Analytics the URL of the page you open, the referrer (the site you came from), your browser type, page load times and similar information
- Google, Apple: login. You are taken to their pages only when you choose to log in
- Feed publishers: RSS feeds are fetched by our server (no information about you is sent). Article thumbnails and site icons are loaded by your browser directly from the publisher, so they receive your IP address and similar information (but not which page loaded them)
- Sites in your links boxes: when you enter a link’s URL, our server fetches that page once to use its title as the link’s name (no information about you is sent). Link icons are loaded by your browser directly from each site, so the site receives your IP address and similar information (but not which page loaded them)
- Google Fonts: fonts are loaded from Google’s servers
- Search engines (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo): words you type in the search box open as search results of the engine you choose, in a new tab. They don’t go through our server
- Bing News: when you add keyword news, our server regularly fetches Bing News results for that keyword (no information about you is sent)
- Apple (WeatherKit): forecasts for weather boxes are fetched by our server from Apple’s WeatherKit, which receives the box’s coordinates (no information about you is sent). The Apple Weather logo is loaded by your browser from Apple’s servers. Your device’s location is never used
- GeoNames: when you search for a weather location, our server sends the place name you type to GeoNames (geonames.org) (no information about you is sent)
- Unsplash: background photos are loaded by your browser directly from Unsplash (including the backgrounds of the demo page you see when not logged in). Photo searches go through our server, which sends your search words to Unsplash. As Unsplash’s terms require, the photo you choose is counted as a download (no information about you is sent)
5. Sharing with others
We don’t share your information with third parties without your consent, except where required by law.
6. Retention and deletion
We keep your account information and what you set up until you delete your account. You can delete it at any time from “Delete account” in Settings. This immediately removes your pages, boxes, settings and login sessions. Copies may remain in our database’s recovery history for up to 30 days.
To request access to, correction of, or a stop to the use of your information, please contact us below.
7. Changes to this policy
Before we collect new kinds of information, use it for new purposes, or add third-party services, we’ll update this policy first. We’ll announce changes to this policy on this page, and major changes in the Service’s news as well.
